About

Taraba State is in the North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, named after the Taraba River, which traverses the southern part of the state. Bordered by Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi and Plateau States and by Nasarawa and Benue to the west, it shares an international border with Cameroon to the east and south; its capital is Jalingo. It was formed in 1991 when the former Gongola State was divided. Taraba's economy is overwhelmingly agricultural, earning it the nickname “Nature's Gift to the Nation” for its fertile land and highland scenery. Opportunities span cereals, coffee, tea, cassava, oil palm, livestock, fisheries and tourism around the Mambilla Plateau, where the major Mambilla hydropower project is planned. Public finance and development priorities focus on agriculture, power and tourism potential, infrastructure, and expanding internally generated revenue.
