Sokoto State is in the extreme north-west of Nigeria, sharing an international border with the Republic of Niger. Its capital and largest city is Sokoto, situated near the confluence of the Sokoto and Rima Rivers. As the seat of the former Sokoto Caliphate, the city is a pre-eminent centre of Islamic learning, and the Sultan of Sokoto is regarded as the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims. Sokoto's economy is predominantly agrarian, with livestock, leatherwork and trade playing central roles. Opportunities span cereals, rice, wheat, livestock and hides, tanning, agro-processing, solid minerals (including phosphate and limestone) and cross-border trade. Public finance and development priorities focus on agriculture, livestock value chains, infrastructure, human capital and growing internally generated revenue.
