Rivers State is in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, within the Niger Delta region of the old Eastern Region. Formed in 1967 when it was split from the Eastern Region, it is bordered by Imo to the north, Abia and Akwa Ibom to the east, and Bayelsa and Delta to the west, with Port Harcourt as its capital. The state is noted for its linguistic diversity, with some 28 indigenous languages, and its geography is shaped by the many rivers that traverse it. Rivers is a cornerstone of Nigeria's oil and gas industry, with Port Harcourt serving as the commercial centre of the sector. Beyond petroleum, opportunities lie in maritime and port logistics, petrochemicals, agriculture and fisheries, and services. Public finance priorities focus on diversifying beyond oil, sustaining infrastructure investment and expanding a strong internally generated revenue base.
