About
Plateau State is in the North-Central geopolitical zone of Nigeria, situated approximately at the centre of the country. It takes its name from the Jos Plateau, whose elevated hills, rock formations and waterfalls give it a temperate climate unique in Nigeria; its capital is Jos. Created in 1976, it is nicknamed the “Home of Peace and Tourism”. Plateau's economy is built on solid minerals, agriculture and tourism. Long a centre of tin and columbite mining, it also produces temperate crops such as potatoes, cereals and vegetables, and offers tourism assets including the Jos Plateau's hills, resorts and wildlife park. Public finance and development priorities focus on mining, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and strengthening internally generated revenue.
