Ondo State is in the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, created in 1976 from the former Western State. It is bordered by Ekiti to the north, Kogi to the north-east, Edo to the east, Delta to the south-east, Ogun to the south-west, Osun to the north-west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, with Akure as its capital. It is nicknamed the “Sunshine State”. Ondo is Nigeria's leading cocoa-producing state and also holds significant oil and gas and bitumen resources. Its economy spans cocoa and other tree crops, petroleum, asphalt and bitumen mining, fisheries and coastal activity, and tourism around the Idanre Hills. Public finance and development priorities focus on agriculture, oil and solid minerals, infrastructure, and expanding internally generated revenue.
