Ogun State is in the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, created in 1976 from the former Western State. It borders Lagos State to the south, Oyo and Osun to the north, Ondo to the east and the Benin Republic to the west, with Abeokuta as its capital and largest city. Predominantly a rainforest with wooded savanna in the north-west, it is nicknamed the “Gateway State”. Ogun is one of Nigeria's leading industrial and manufacturing hubs, hosting a dense concentration of industrial estates. Major producers include the Dangote and Lafarge cement plants, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble and Coleman Cables, alongside a strong agricultural base of cassava, kola nut, rice and poultry. Public finance priorities focus on sustaining industrialisation, infrastructure, the ease of doing business and a robust internally generated revenue base.
