Imo State is in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, bordered by Anambra State to the north, Rivers State to the west and south, and Abia State to the east. It takes its name from the Imo River, which flows along its eastern border. Created in 1976, it has Owerri as its capital and is nicknamed the “Eastern Heartland”. Imo's economy rests on oil and gas, agriculture and a fast-growing services and commerce sector. Opportunities span petroleum and gas, palm produce, cassava, yam, agro-processing, ICT and tourism. Public finance and development priorities focus on diversifying revenue beyond oil, infrastructure, human capital and improving the business environment to attract investment.
