Enugu State is in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone, bordered by Benue and Kogi to the north, Ebonyi to the east, Abia to the south and Anambra to the west. The state takes its name from its capital and largest city, Enugu, whose name is derived from the Igbo words Énú Ụ́gwụ́, meaning “hilltop”, reflecting the area’s hilly landscape. Enugu State was created on 27 August 1991 from the old Anambra State and has 17 local government areas. Historically known as the “Coal City State”, Enugu developed around coal mining and remains an important administrative, commercial and transport hub in the South-East. The state’s economy offers opportunities in logistics and transportation, palm oil, brewing, coal, rice, cashew, ICT, real estate, cassava, and tourism. Its location and urban centre support trade and services, while public finance planning is increasingly focused on infrastructure, agriculture, investment attraction and sustainable economic growth.
