About

Ekiti State is in the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, bordered by Kwara State to the north, Kogi to the north-east, Ondo to the south and south-east, and Osun to the west. Named after the Ekiti people, a Yoruba subgroup, it was created in 1996 from part of Ondo State and has Ado-Ekiti as its capital. Ekiti's economy is predominantly agrarian, underpinned by a strong tradition of education and public service. Its main opportunities lie in cocoa, oil palm, rice, cassava and other food crops, agro-processing, solid minerals (including kaolin, granite and feldspar) and tourism. In 2022, Ekiti became the first Nigerian state to adopt an official state tree, the Obeche (Triplochiton scleroxylon), recognising its economic and cultural significance. Public finance and development priorities focus on agriculture, human capital, infrastructure, and expanding internally generated revenue.
