Delta State is in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, named after the Niger Delta, much of which lies within it. Formed from the former Bendel State on 27 August 1991, it is bordered by Edo State to the north, Anambra and Rivers to the east, Bayelsa to the south, and the Bight of Benin to the west along some 160 km of coastline. Asaba is the state capital, while Warri is its principal economic centre; the state now comprises 25 local government areas. Delta's economy is dominated by oil and gas, with significant petroleum production, refining and petrochemical activity around Warri. Beyond hydrocarbons, opportunities include maritime and port logistics, agriculture (oil palm, rubber, cassava and fisheries), manufacturing and power. Public finance priorities focus on diversifying beyond oil, sustaining infrastructure investment, human-capital development and broadening internally generated revenue.
