About

Akwa Ibom State is in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, bordered by Cross River State to the east, Rivers and Abia States to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. It takes its name from the Qua Iboe River, which bisects the state before flowing into the Bight of Bonny. Carved out of Cross River State in 1987, it has Uyo as its capital and comprises 31 local government areas. As a coastal Niger Delta state, Akwa Ibom's economy is dominated by oil and gas, complemented by a growing focus on industrialisation and services. Opportunities include petroleum and gas, aviation and maritime logistics, agriculture (oil palm, cassava, and fisheries), tourism, and manufacturing, supported by assets such as the Ibom Deep Sea Port project, the state-owned Ibom Air, and dedicated industrial parks. Public finance priorities centre on diversifying the revenue base beyond oil, sustaining infrastructure investment and expanding internally generated revenue.
