Adamawa State is in the North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, bordered by Borno to the north-west, Gombe to the west and Taraba to the south-west, while its eastern boundary forms part of the international border with Cameroon. It takes its name from the historic Adamawa Emirate, whose old capital, Yola, serves as the state capital. Formed in 1991 when the former Gongola State was split into Adamawa and Taraba, it is among Nigeria's most ethnically diverse states, with more than 100 indigenous groups. The state's economy is predominantly agrarian, anchored in crop farming, livestock and fisheries along the Benue valley. Key opportunities lie in cereals, cotton, groundnuts, cattle and agro-processing, alongside solid minerals and cross-border trade with Cameroon. Public finance and development priorities are directed at expanding infrastructure, boosting agricultural productivity, growing internally generated revenue, and improving human capital outcomes.
